Frida Kahlo’s self-portrait is expected to break auction records

New York City, U.S. – Frida Kahlo’s self-portrait “Diego y yo” will be auctioned at Sotheby’s in New York. It is expected to sell for as much as US$50 million, breaking the record for the most valuable works in Latin American art auctions.

Tuesday’s auction heralded Sotheby’s recent expansion plans to include more underrepresented artists, especially female artists. The auction house stated that Kahlo’s works contained “primitive emotional power” and Diego y yo captured “inner anxiety and pain.”

Diego y yo (Diego and I) depicts Carlo’s turbulent second marriage to Mexican muralist Diego Rivera (Diego Rivera). This painting was completed in 1949 and was Carlo’s last fully realized self-portrait of a bust before his death at the age of 47 in 1954.

This work hints at Rivera’s relationship with Mexican actress Maria Felix, who is also a close friend of Carlo. At that time, this matter became the topic of countless rumors and tabloids. In public, Carlo joked about it.

Diego y yo put a small picture of Rivera on the center of Kahlo’s forehead. The image of Rivera has a third eye.

Kahlo’s black hair, usually depicted in neat braids in her paintings, hangs loosely on her face, almost strangling her neck. Her cheeks were flushed. Three tears flowed from the corners of her eyes.

The last time Diego y yo was sold at Sotheby’s for $1.4 million was in 1990, when it broke records and made Kahlo the first Latin American artist to sell for more than $1 million at auction.

Kahlo is one of the elite groups that transcends the art world to become influential artists in popular culture and other fields. In recent decades, her commercial appeal has soared to a rare height for painters. She is one of the most well-known artists of the 20th century, rising to fame with pop icon Andy Warhol.

The image of Kahlo—brown hair braids, flowers in hair, bushy eyebrows, red lips—has been printed on countless T-shirts and other merchandise and sold in major retail chains such as Old Navy, Target and Urban Outfitters.

Behind the bright colors is the story of painful life: body and emotion.

At the age of 18, Carlo nearly died in a bus accident, which allowed her to lead a life of chronic pain, which she often portrays in her self-portraits. Her work also conveys the emotional pain caused by her marriage with Rivera.

Their artistic union lasted until the 21st century. Kahlo’s current auction record is 8 million U.S. dollars, titled “Two Nudes in the Forest”, which was sold in 2016. This was the highest price for Latin American art before 2018, when Rivera’s “Competitor” was sold at Christie’s for $9.76 million.

She is now ready to take back the crown from him on Tuesday.

In the viewing room of the Sotheby’s Building in the Upper East Side of New York, Diego y yo is displayed there. The walls are black and the light is very dark. What is striking is the bright portrait of a crying woman, sad, and the man on her forehead. The painting is very small, about 30 cm (11.8 inches) long and 22.4 cm (8.8 inches) wide. Tourists leaned close to watch. They took pictures with their iPhone.

On the black wall on the right, printed in gold letters, is Carlo’s own words describing her relationship with Rivera, what the world expects of her and what she really likes or desires to be. She is open. She is sharing. She didn’t want to be regarded as a victim. She said that despite all the sacrifices she made, she would eventually win.

These words read no different from modern Instagram headlines:

“I would not say that Diego is’my husband’ because it is ridiculous. Diego has never been and will never be anyone’s’husband’… Maybe some people expect me to be a very personal,’female’ “Fine”, anecdotes, funny portraits, full of complaints… Maybe they want to hear my lament, saying that living with people like Diego “how much pain”. But I don’t believe that the river bank will be caused by the flow of water. Suffer, the earth will suffer because of rain, or the atom will suffer because of the release of energy… For me, everything is naturally compensated. In my difficult and obscure role as an ally of extraordinary existence, I have gained The same reward as the green dots in the red quantity. I got the’balanced’ reward.”

The auction is scheduled to start at 7pm local time on Tuesday evening (Wednesday 00:00 GMT).
